A young student, by name, Linus Torvalds, of the University of Helsinki, Finland, developed a fascination for Minix, a small Unix system and his fascination turned into an obsession for creating an operating system better than Minix. He succeeded in his efforts and brought out the first version of Linux Kernel in 1994, called version 1.0. Linux operating system culminated only on the basis of this Kernel. Several individuals and companies used this Kernel and with innovative modifications, brought out their own versions of Linux operating systems. 2.6 is the current version of Linux operating system and to endure and resonate vibrantly to the all-round changes in requirements, continuous efforts for development of suitable versions are being made.
