We all have a great number of demands on our time, and generally if we desire to learn a new profession, taking a course in addition to a 40 hour week is what we’re faced with. Microsoft certified training could offer a solution.

Perhaps you’d like to have a chat about jobs with a person who’s got industry experience – and if you haven’t come to a decision, then get help to sort out whereabouts in industry would work for you, dependent on your personality.

Make sure your course is personalised to your ability level and skills. A reputable training company will make sure that your training program is purpose built for the status you wish to achieve.

One fatal mistake that we encounter all too often is to choose a career based on a course, and take their eye off where they want to get to. Schools are full of unaware students who took a course because it seemed fun – instead of the program that would surely get them the career they desired.

It’s a sad fact, but the majority of trainees begin programs that seem spectacular from the marketing materials, but which provides the end-result of a job that doesn’t satisfy. Speak to a selection of university graduates for examples.

You must also consider what your attitude is towards career progression and earning potential, plus your level of ambition. You should understand what will be expected of you, which exams are needed and where you’ll pick-up experience from.

We’d recommend you seek advice from an experienced industry professional before embarking on a study programme, so you can be sure that a program provides the skills for the job being sought.

Always expect the latest Microsoft (or Cisco, CompTIA etc.) authorised simulation materials and exam preparation packages.

Make sure that the exams you practice are not just posing the correct questions on the correct subjects, but are also posing them in the same way that the proper exam will pose them. This completely unsettles trainees if they’re met with completely different formats and phraseologies.

Ensure that you have some simulated exam questions that will allow you to verify your knowledge along the way. Simulations of exams help to build your confidence – then the actual exam is much easier.

<!--

It would be wonderful to believe that our careers will always be secure and our work prospects are protected, but the growing likelihood for most sectors around the United Kingdom right now appears to be that security just isn’t there anymore.

Of course, a marketplace with high growth, with a constant demand for staff (through a massive shortfall of trained professionals), provides a market for true job security.

The Information Technology (IT) skills shortage around the United Kingdom is standing at around 26 percent, as reported by a recent e-Skills study. This shows that for each 4 job positions available throughout computing, there are only 3 trained people to do them.

This single idea on its own clearly demonstrates why the United Kingdom needs so many more people to get into the IT sector.

In actuality, acquiring professional IT skills during the next few years is almost definitely the finest career direction you could choose.

The area most overlooked by people considering a training program is that of ‘training segmentation’. Basically, this means the method used to break up the program for drop-shipping to you, which makes a huge difference to what you end up with.

Often, you’ll join a programme that takes between and 1 and 3 years and get sent one module each time you pass an exam. It seems to make sense on one level, but consider these issues:

How would they react if you didn’t complete each section at the proposed pace? Sometimes their preference of study order doesn’t come as naturally as an alternative path could be.

Ideally, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – meaning you’ll have all of them to come back to in the future – at any time you choose. You can also vary the order in which you attack each section if you find another route more intuitive.

The CCNA certification is the way to go for training in Cisco. With it, you’ll learn how to handle maintaining and installing routers and switches. The internet is made up of many routers, and large companies who have different locations utilise them to allow their networks to keep in touch.

It’s vital that you already know a good deal about computer networks and how they operate and function, because computer networks are joined to routers. If not, it’s likely you’ll run into difficulties. Better to find training that also includes the basics (CompTIA Network+ as an example – maybe with the A+ as well) and then do a CCNA course. Some companies will design a bespoke package for you.

If you haven’t yet had any experience of routers, then qualifying up to the CCNA level is definitely sufficient – don’t be pushed into attempting your CCNP. With a few years experience behind you, you’ll know if CCNP is something you want to do.

A competent and specialised advisor (vs a salesperson) will ask questions and seek to comprehend your current experience level and abilities. There is no other way of calculating your study start-point. Occasionally, the starting point of study for a student experienced in some areas will be largely dissimilar to someone without. Starting with a basic PC skills program first can be the best way to get up and running on your IT programme, but really depends on your level of familiarity with computers.

Please understand this most important point: You absolutely must have proper 24×7 instructor and mentor support. Later, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t follow this rule rigidly. Beware of institutions that use ‘out-of-hours’ messaging systems – where you’ll get called back during office hours. It’s not a lot of help when you’ve got study issues and want support there and then.

The most successful trainers utilise several support facilities around the globe in several time-zones. By utilising an interactive interface to seamlessly link them all, no matter what time you login, there is always help at hand, with no hassle or contact issues. Seek out a training provider that is worth purchasing from. Only proper round-the-clock 24×7 support truly delivers for technical programs.

Many people don’t really get what information technology means. It’s stimulating, innovative, and means you’re a part of the huge progress of technology that will impact the whole world for generations to come. Society largely thinks that the increase in technology that’s been a familiar part of our recent lives is slowing down. There is no truth in this at all. We have yet to experience incredible advances, and the internet in particular will be the biggest thing to affect the way we live.

Always remember that on average, the income of a person in the IT industry throughout this country is considerably higher than in other market sectors, so in general you will probably gain significantly more with professional IT knowledge, than you could reasonably hope to achieve elsewhere. The requirement for certified IT specialists is certain for a good while yet, thanks to the continuous increase in the marketplace and the huge deficiency still present.

It’s usual for students to get confused with one aspect of their training which is often not even considered: The breakdown of the course materials before being couriered to your address. Individual deliveries for each training module one piece at a time, according to your own speed is the typical way that your program will arrive. While seeming sensible, you should take these factors into account: What would their reaction be if you find it difficult to do each element at the required speed? And maybe you’ll find their order of completion won’t fit you as well as some other order of studying might.

Truth be told, the perfect answer is to have their ideal ‘order’ of training laid out, but get all the study materials at the start. Everything is then in your possession in case you don’t finish within their ideal time-table.

Make sure that all your exams are current and commercially required – forget programs which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you’d printed it yourself). From a commercial standpoint, only the major heavyweights like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe (for example) really carry any commercial clout. Anything less just won’t hit the right spot.

by Jason Kendall

A very small number of men and women in Great Britain are enjoying job satisfaction. Naturally most will take no action. You’ve reached this paragraph, which if nothing else indicates that you’re considering or may be ready for a change.

It’s advisable to get some help before you start – find someone who knows the industry; someone who’ll give you career advice based on what works best for you, and then show you the learning programs which are appropriate for you:

* Do you see yourself dealing with people? Is that as part of a team or with a lot of new people? Perhaps working alone on specific tasks may be your preference?

* Are you thinking carefully about which area you maybe could work in? (With the economic downturn, it’s essential to choose carefully.)

* Is this the last time you envisage re-training, and based on that, will your chosen career path allow you to do that?

* Do you have niggles about the possibility of getting another job, and staying employable to the end of your working life?

It would be an idea for you to really explore the computer industry – there are greater numbers of positions than workers to do them, and it’s a rare career choice where the market sector is on the grow. In contrast to what some people would have you think, it isn’t just geeks looking at screens all day long (if you like the sound of that though, they do exist.) The majority of jobs are taken by ordinary men and women who enjoy better than average salaries.

IT has become one of the more exciting and ground-breaking industries you could be involved with. To be dealing with leading-edge technology is to be a part of the massive changes that will affect us all over the next generation. We’re barely beginning to get to grips with how all this change will affect us. How we communicate and interact with everyone around us will be profoundly affected by technology and the internet.

Wages in the IT sector aren’t to be ignored also – the typical remuneration in the UK for a typical IT employee is significantly more than the national average. Chances are that you’ll earn a much greater package than you could reasonably hope to get in other industries. It’s no secret that there is a significant UK-wide need for trained and qualified IT technicians. And as growth in the industry shows little sign of contracting, it looks like this pattern will continue for quite some time to come.

Beginning from the viewpoint that we need to locate the market that sounds most inviting first, before we can weigh up which training course would meet that requirement, how can we choose the correct route? How can most of us possibly understand the day-to-day realities of any IT job when we’ve never done it? Most likely we don’t even know anybody who performs the role either. Reflection on the following areas is vital when you need to discover the right answers:

* Your hobbies and interests – these can highlight what possibilities will give you the most reward.

* Are you looking to pull off a closely held objective – like becoming self-employed as quickly as possible?

* Where do you stand on travelling time and locality vs salary?

* Some students don’t fully understand the amount of work needed to achieve their goals.

* Having a proper look at the level of commitment, time and effort that you can put aside.

In actuality, it’s obvious that the only real way to investigate these areas will be via a meeting with an experienced advisor who understands IT (and chiefly it’s commercial needs and requirements.)

Getting your first commercial position can be a little easier if you’re supported with a Job Placement Assistance facility. However sometimes this feature is bigged up too much, as it is genuinely quite straightforward for any focused and well taught person to get work in the IT environment – because companies everywhere are seeking well trained people.

You would ideally have advice and support about your CV and interviews though; additionally, we would recommend any student to work on polishing up their CV the day they start training – don’t delay till you’ve finished your exams. It’s possible that you won’t have even taken your exams when you will be offered your first junior support job; yet this is not possible if interviewers don’t get sight of your CV. The most efficient companies to get you a new position are most often independent and specialised local recruitment services. As they’re keen to place you to receive their commission, they’ll work that much harder to get a result.

Essentially, if you put as much hard work into securing your first IT position as into studying, you’re not going to hit many challenges. A number of trainees strangely spend hundreds of hours on their course materials and then call a halt once they’ve passed their exams and would appear to think that businesses will just discover them.

One area often overlooked by people thinking about a course is the issue of ‘training segmentation’. Basically, this means the breakdown of the materials for delivery to you, which makes a huge difference to where you end up. Often, you’ll enrol on a course staged over 2 or 3 years and receive one element at a time until graduation. While this may sound logical on one level, consider this: What if there are reasons why you can’t finish every single exam? Maybe the prescribed order won’t suit you? Through no fault of your own, you might take a little longer and consequently not get all your materials.

To be straight, the best solution is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but make sure you have all of your learning modules right from the beginning. Meaning you’ve got it all in the event you don’t complete everything within their ideal time-table.

Ask almost any capable consultant and they can normally tell you many awful tales of students who’ve been sold completely the wrong course for them. Ensure you only ever work with a skilled professional who asks lots of questions to discover the most appropriate thing for you – not for their retirement-fund! You must establish a starting-point that will suit you. If you’ve got any real-world experience or certification, it may be that your starting point of study is very different to someone completely new. Always consider starting with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first. This can set the scene for your on-going studies and make the transition to higher-level learning a a little easier.

Nearly all aspiring web designers start their careers with Adobe Dreamweaver training. It’s reputed to be the most utilised web-development platform globally. In order to take advantage of Dreamweaver commercially as a web designer, an in-depth understanding of the full Adobe Web Creative Suite (which incorporates Flash and Action Script) is highly recommended. Having this knowledge will mean, you have the choice to become either an Adobe Certified Expert or Adobe Certified Professional (ACE or ACP).

In order to become a well-rounded web professional however, you’ll have to get more diverse knowledge. You’ll be required to have knowledge of some programming essentials like HTML, PHP and database engines like MySQL. A firm grounding in Search Engine Optimisation and E Commerce will also improve your CV and employability.

How can we arrive at the right decisions then? With such prospects, we’ll need to know where to look – and of course, what to actually be searching for.

Considering the amount of options that are available, is it any wonder that a large majority of career changers have no idea which career they should even pursue. Since with no commercial background in the IT industry, how can most of us be expected to know what any job actually involves? Generally, the way to deal with this question correctly lies in a thorough conversation around some important points:

* Personalities play a major part – what gives you a ‘kick’, and what tasks get you down.

* Why it seems right getting involved with the IT industry – is it to triumph over a life-long goal such as working for yourself maybe.

* How highly do you rate salary – is it of prime importance, or do you place job satisfaction a little higher on your list of priorities?

* There are many different sectors to gain certifications for in the IT industry – it’s wise to get some background information on what differentiates them.

* Taking a proper look at the level of commitment, time and effort you’ll make available.

When all is said and done, the most intelligent way of understanding everything necessary is by means of an in-depth discussion with a professional that understands the market well enough to be able to guide you.

A lot of training schools are still using the rather old-fashioned idea of classroom lessons. Usually touted as a major benefit, after discussion with someone who has first-hand experience, you’ll find them listing some or most of the following problems:

* Periodic visits to the centre – 100’s of miles in many cases.

* Weekday only accessibility with workshops is the norm, and trying to take several days leave in a single chunk can represent quite a problem for many working people.

* And don’t ignore the lost holiday days. Usually we’re lucky to have 4 weeks annual leave. If half of that is used up on workshops, then we haven’t got much left for ourselves.

* Classes invariably become over full.

* Often attendees want to work as quickly as possible, others want a more steady pace and not be pushed beyond their comfort-zone. This will often generate difficulty and tension in most cases.

* Many trainees speak about the high (and unexpected) costs associated with getting transport to and from the training venue while covering the cost of accommodation and food can get very expensive.

* A lot of trainees want their studies to remain private and therefore avoiding all management questions in their job.

* We all feel awkward about asking questions in a class full of our fellow trainees – because none of us wants to look like we don’t understand.

* Don’t forget, days in-centre frequently become simply impossible to attend, if you work elsewhere in the country for part of the week.

A more flexible training route is to exploit pre-made workshops wherever you want to take them – studying at your own pace, when it suits you – not someone else. If anything comes up, utilise the 24×7 Support (that should come with any technical program.) Keep in mind, if you have a laptop, you could study wherever the mood takes you. Repeat any of the classes as often as you want – repetition is good for memory. And you’ll never have to write notes again – it’s all laid on. What could be more straightforward: No travelling, wasted time or money; and of course you get a more peaceful learning atmosphere.
